Malolo is the largest island in the Mamanuca group, about 25 km west of Nadi International Airport. It is a hilly, volcanic island with two Fijian villages, Yaro and Solevu, and a few very different resorts. You can stay at an adults-only hideaway, a family resort or a small boutique lodge. A fringing reef and a protected marine area run along its shores, and trails lead to the island's summit.

Because it sits close to the mainland and near the southern Mamanuca surf breaks, Malolo makes an easy base for a first Fiji trip. Here is how the island is laid out.

Where Malolo sits in the Mamanucas

The Mamanucas are the island chain closest to Nadi, and Malolo is at their southern end. Smaller Malolo Lailai lies right alongside it. That neighbouring island is home to Musket Cove, Plantation Island and the adults-only Lomani Island Resort, so the two islands are often mentioned together. Farther north are Mana, Matamanoa, Tokoriki and Monuriki, the island where the film Cast Away was shot. South of Malolo, the outer barrier reef holds well-known surf breaks such as Cloudbreak, Wilkes Passage and Restaurants.

If you are still choosing between islands, our Mamanuca Islands travel guide compares the whole group.

The villages: Yaro and Solevu

Malolo is home to two villages, and the island's landowners and many resort staff come from them. Both welcome visitors on organized trips:

  • Yaro is the chiefly village, on the far side of the island from the main resorts. Malolo Island Resort and Likuliku run village trips there by boat, a ride of about 15 minutes. Guests meet local families and hear about the island's history.
  • Solevu is visited from Tropica Island Resort on a village and school tour. The tour starts with a welcome from the village headman, then a walk through the village. It needs at least four guests, and any handicrafts you buy are cash only.

Village etiquette matters. The resorts ask guests to wear a sulu (sarong) and avoid short dresses, shorts and swimwear. Hats come off while walking through the village. Bring small notes for craft purchases.

Resorts on Malolo

Likuliku and Malolo Island Resort are sister properties next to each other, both owned by a local Fijian family company. That gives families at Malolo a short hop to Likuliku's helipad. Tropica, on its own bay, has a quieter, more intimate feel. Across the water on Malolo Lailai, Musket Cove and Plantation Island add more choices, and Lomani is adults-only. Walking tracks and the summit

Malolo is one of the better Mamanuca islands for walking because it has real hills. The resort activity program lists several trails of different lengths and difficulty:

  • Jona's Lookout: a shorter climb with views over the resorts and surrounding water.
  • Ridge Track to Naroba Point: a longer ridge walk along the island's spine.
  • Mangrove Walk: a flatter option along the coastal mangroves.
  • Mt Uluisilo: the island's summit and the main hike, with the remains of an old World War II American fort at the top.

Walk early in the morning, take more water than you think you need, and wear proper shoes, not reef sandals. Ask the activities desk about trail conditions and whether a guide is recommended for the summit.

Lagoon access, snorkelling and the marine reserve

A fringing coral reef surrounds Malolo, so snorkelling starts close to shore. Likuliku's name means "calm waters" in the Malolo dialect. Its lagoon was traditionally a safe harbour for canoes, and today the resort's overwater bures sit on the edge of a protected marine sanctuary. Fishing is banned in the marine reserve around Malolo and Likuliku. Fishing trips go to areas farther out.

Both sister resorts include non-motorized gear such as stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, sailing craft and snorkel equipment. They also run boat trips to snorkel sites around the group. For calm water and clear visibility, go in the morning before the breeze builds. The resorts' early island-hopping trip passes Castaway, Mana and Matamanoa, then stops for a swim at Monuriki.

Back on land, ask about the Fijian crested iguana program. Likuliku runs presentations and tours of its iguana sanctuary and dry-forest habitat, explaining how the species has been protected on Malolo.

Getting to Malolo

  • Catamaran: South Sea Cruises leaves Denarau Marina several times a day. Morning and midday sailings stop at other islands and take longer. The afternoon sailing runs direct in under an hour. Tropica lists about 45 minutes direct, and the Ahura resorts about 55 minutes.
  • Water taxi: private or shared speedboats run from Port Denarau at times that suit your flight.
  • Helicopter: about a 10-minute flight from Nadi, according to Tropica's transfer guide. Weight limits apply, and flights run in daylight only.

Port Denarau is about 25 minutes by road from Nadi airport. If your international flight lands late, plan a night near Nadi and take a morning boat. Fares and fuel surcharges change, so check current rates when you book. Malolo also makes a good first or last stop on a longer trip. See how to plan island hopping in Fiji.

A sample three-night stay

  1. Day 1: Take the afternoon direct catamaran from Denarau, check in, then snorkel the house reef before sunset.
  2. Day 2: Join the early island-hopping trip toward Monuriki and back for a late breakfast. In the afternoon, visit the crested iguana sanctuary or join a village trip to Yaro, wearing a sulu.
  3. Day 3: Start at first light on the Mt Uluisilo trail while it is still cool. Spend the afternoon paddleboarding or kayaking the lagoon. Surfers can swap the hike for a boat trip to the southern reef breaks.
  4. Day 4: Take a final morning swim, then a midday or afternoon boat, a water taxi, or a 10-minute helicopter hop back to Nadi.

Activity schedules change daily, so check the resort activity list and sign up on arrival.

Planning notes

Choose your resort by who is travelling: Likuliku or Tropica for couples, Malolo Island Resort for families. Then book the transfer that fits your arrival time. Plan one morning for the summit walk and one for a village visit, and leave the rest for the lagoon. Far & Away Adventures can combine Malolo with a Yasawa or mainland stay so the boat schedules line up.

Frequently asked questions

Is Malolo the same as Malolo Lailai?

No. They are neighbouring islands. Malolo is the larger island with the two villages, Likuliku, Malolo Island Resort and Tropica. Malolo Lailai is home to Musket Cove, Plantation Island and Lomani.

Can day visitors explore Malolo?

Likuliku is reserved for in-house guests. Day visits elsewhere depend on each resort's policy, so it is simpler to stay on the island to use its trails and lagoon.

Is Malolo good for surfers?

Yes. Resorts run surf trips to Cloudbreak, Wilkes Passage, Desperation and Restaurants on the southern barrier reef. Conditions suit experienced surfers.
