Flying to Fiji From Toronto: Best Connections

There is no nonstop flight from Toronto to Fiji. Every itinerary connects at least once, and the two practical gateways are Vancouver, on Fiji Airways' nonstop to Nadi, and the US West Coast or Honolulu, where Fiji Airways also flies to Nadi. Vancouver keeps the whole trip in Canada until the Pacific crossing. A US connection usually gives you more departure days.

Either way, plan on a long travel day, a date-line crossing that costs you a calendar day heading south, and ideally a stopover to break it up.

Routes and operating days change from season to season, so always check the airline's current schedule before planning around a specific day.

Via Vancouver: the all-Canadian route

Fiji Airways launched Nadi–Vancouver flights in 2022 and operates the route several times a week, with extra seasonal flights at busy times. It also has codeshare partners on the route. Fiji Airways is a oneworld alliance member, which opens up partner earning and connections.

When the route launched, the southbound flight was scheduled at just under 12 hours. It left Vancouver in the late evening and reached Nadi early in the morning two calendar days later because of the International Date Line. Schedules shift, but that overnight pattern is typical, so you arrive with a full day ahead.

  • Pros: the Toronto–Vancouver leg is domestic, so there is no US border to clear, and Toronto–Vancouver has many flights every day.
  • Cons: only a few Pacific departures a week, so a delay into Vancouver can cost you more than a day. Build in a buffer.

Via the United States: more flight days

Fiji Travel Pro travel experience

Fiji Airways also flies nonstop to Nadi from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu. Toronto has plenty of nonstop service to Los Angeles and San Francisco, which gives you more ways to line up a connection.

The key difference is the border. The US has no airside international transit, so you clear US entry even if you are only changing planes. From Toronto Pearson that usually happens before you leave: US Customs and Border Protection runs preclearance in Pearson's Terminals 1 and 3. You arrive in the US as a domestic passenger, which makes the connection smoother. Leave time for the preclearance line at Pearson, and make sure every traveller in your party meets US entry rules, not just Fiji's.

Breaking up the trip

Toronto to Nadi is a long way in one go. A stopover makes the trip much easier, especially with children or for older travellers:

  1. Vancouver overnight. Fly Toronto to Vancouver in the morning, stay near the airport or downtown, and take the late-evening Fiji flight the next day. You start the long flight rested, and a delayed first leg will not cost you the Pacific crossing.
  2. Hawaii stopover. Routing through Honolulu lets you spend a few nights in Hawaii, which splits the Pacific in two.
  3. California stopover. A night or two in Los Angeles or San Francisco works for travellers combining Fiji with family visits or a US holiday.
  4. Arrival buffer in Nadi. Even with a smooth connection, plan your first night on the mainland or Denarau, then take a morning boat or seaplane to your island. Our Fiji trip planning page shows how we put the pieces together.

Tickets, timing and fares

  • Book one ticket where possible. When Toronto to Nadi is on a single booking, your bags are checked through and a missed connection is the airline's problem to rebook. Separate tickets leave the risk with you.
  • Watch the date line. Southbound you lose a day, and northbound you gain it back, often landing in Canada the same calendar day you left Fiji. Double-check hotel and transfer dates against your real arrival date.
  • Book early for peak months. July, August and Christmas fill first on limited long-haul flights. Our guides to the cheapest times to book Fiji flights and finding Fiji flight deals go deeper.
  • Points and partners. With Fiji Airways in oneworld, travellers with British Airways or American Airlines loyalty accounts should check partner earning and award options.

Making the Pacific leg easier

  • Pick your seat early. On an overnight flight of close to 12 hours, an aisle or window you chose yourself makes a real difference. If you are considering business class, price it early for peak dates.
  • Sleep on the Pacific crossing. Southbound flights usually leave in the evening and land in the morning. Stay awake on the domestic leg, then sleep over the ocean so you arrive in step with Fiji time.
  • Drink plenty of water. Cabin air is dry. Bring an empty refillable bottle through security and fill it before boarding.
  • Keep essentials in your carry-on. Pack swimwear, sunscreen, medication and a change of clothes in case a checked bag runs a day behind.

Documents for Canadians

According to the Government of Canada's Fiji travel advice, Canadians do not need a tourist visa for stays of up to four months. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave Fiji, and officials may ask for a return or onward ticket. Airlines can have stricter passport rules than the country itself, so check with your carrier too. If you connect in the US, you also need to meet US entry requirements. Entry rules can change, so review them shortly before you travel. See our Fiji entry requirements page for more.

Planning notes

Choose your gateway first: Vancouver for simplicity, or the US for more flight days. Then check the Pacific schedule for your travel month before you book the Toronto leg. Add a stopover or a Nadi buffer night and keep everything on one ticket. Far & Away Adventures can price both routings side by side and line up your island transfers with your real arrival time.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fly from Toronto to Fiji?

Allow most of a day in the air plus connection time. The Vancouver to Nadi flight alone is close to 12 hours, and you also lose a calendar day crossing the International Date Line southbound.

Is it better to connect in Vancouver or Los Angeles?

Vancouver avoids the US border and keeps the first leg domestic. Los Angeles usually offers more departure days. The right choice depends on your dates, your group's passports and fares.

Do I clear US customs if I just connect in Los Angeles?

Yes. The US requires entry processing for connecting passengers. From Toronto Pearson this is normally done through US preclearance before departure.
