Canadians can visit Fiji as tourists without a visa for up to four months, as long as the passport is valid for at least six months beyond the departure date and you hold a return or onward ticket. Fiji Airways flies nonstop from Vancouver, and travellers from the rest of Canada connect there. The main things to plan are the right season for your dates, Fijian dollars or a low-fee card, and travel insurance with strong medical cover.
Entry rules for Canadian passport holders
The Government of Canada's Fiji travel advice sets out the basics for a regular Canadian passport:
- Passport validity: at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave Fiji. Airlines may apply stricter rules, so renew early if you are close.
- Visa: not required for tourist stays of up to four months. Business, work and study trips need a visa.
- Onward ticket: customs officials will ask to see a return or onward ticket.
- Customs and biosecurity: Fiji has strict import rules, particularly for food, plants, weapons, pets, drugs and tobacco. Declare anything you are unsure about and leave fruit and snacks from the plane on board.
Our Fiji visa requirements guide covers the arrival process, extensions and special cases in more detail. Check both sources again close to departure, as entry rules can change.
Flights: Vancouver and the rest of Canada
Fiji Airways is the only airline flying nonstop between Canada and Fiji. Its Vancouver to Nadi route runs several times a week year-round on wide-body aircraft. Flights leave Vancouver late at night and arrive in Nadi early in the morning two calendar days later, because you cross the International Date Line.
From elsewhere in Canada, the simplest option is often a single ticket through the Fiji Airways and WestJet codeshare, which covers WestJet flights from cities including Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and Halifax to the Vancouver departure. Bags are checked through to Nadi, and you check in once.
| Starting point | Usual routing | Our tip |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Mainland | Nonstop from YVR | Pick your dates around the nonstop days first |
| Vancouver Island and BC Interior | Short flight to YVR, same day | Fly rather than take the ferry on the outbound day |
| Prairies | WestJet or Air Canada to YVR | Aim to land in Vancouver by mid-afternoon |
| Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada | Domestic connection to YVR, or via a US gateway | Consider a night in Vancouver to break the trip |
Money: Fijian dollars and cards

Fiji uses the Fijian dollar (FJD). Resorts, larger hotels and many tour operators in Nadi and Denarau take credit cards, but markets, taxis, buses and small village shops usually want cash. Some practical points from our clients' trips:
- Bring a card with no foreign transaction fee if you have one. Card surcharges are common in Fiji; Likuliku Lagoon Resort, for example, lists a 2.5% fee on card payments.
- Get cash in Nadi. Withdraw or exchange cash on the mainland, for example in Nadi town or at Port Denarau, because small island resorts may have no ATM.
- Watch the rate when comparing prices. Many resorts quote in Fijian dollars, so the Canadian-dollar cost moves with the exchange rate.
- Tell your bank you are travelling so a foreign transaction doesn't block your card.
Our Fiji money and currency guide covers notes, coins, cards and fees in depth.
Health, safety and insurance
Fiji is a straightforward destination for most Canadians, and the federal government rates it "take normal security precautions". Still, a few points deserve attention before you go:
- Medical care: the Government of Canada notes that good health care is severely limited, clinics and hospitals usually want payment up front, and serious cases may need evacuation. Buy travel medical insurance that includes medical evacuation, as provincial plans cover little or nothing abroad.
- Mosquito-borne illness: dengue, chikungunya and Zika are risks. Pack repellent and cover up around dawn and dusk. Talk to a travel clinic six weeks or more before departure about vaccines.
- Petty crime: pickpocketing and bag snatching happen in busy parts of Nadi and Suva. Use your hotel safe and keep valuables out of sight.
- Beaches: most are unsupervised, so ask resort staff about currents before swimming or snorkelling.
- Driving: traffic drives on the left and the advice is to carry an International Driving Permit.
Canada has a High Commission in Suva, and registering with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service means you can be contacted in an emergency. Our Fiji travel insurance guide explains what to look for in a policy.
When Canadians should go
Fiji's drier season runs roughly May to October; the rainy and cyclone season, which the Government of Canada places from November to April, overlaps with the Canadian winter. That is when many of us most want to go, and it can still be a good trip. Here is how the calendar usually works for Canadian travellers:
| Canadian holiday period | Fiji season | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas and New Year | Rainy season | Busy, with peak rates and minimum stays at many resorts; book early |
| February to March spring breaks | Late rainy season | Hot and humid with heavier showers; flexible plans and insurance matter |
| July and August | Dry season | Pleasant weather, popular with Australian and New Zealand families too |
| September and October | Late dry season | Often our favourite months: settled weather before the rains return |
Practical details before you fly
- Time difference: Fiji is close to a full day ahead of Western Canada, so plan calls home for your evening, which is their morning.
- Jet lag: the shift is effectively four to five hours rather than 20, so most people adjust within a couple of days. Get daylight on arrival and stay awake until evening.
- Packing: light, quick-dry clothing, a modest cover-up for village visits, reef-safe sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a power adapter.
- Tipping: tipping is not a strong custom in Fiji the way it is in Canada. Many resorts run a staff fund that guests can contribute to at check-out, which is shared among all employees.
- Village etiquette: if you visit a village, cover shoulders and knees, remove hats and follow your guide's lead. It is the single most useful thing to know for cultural visits.
- Connectivity: check what your Canadian mobile plan charges for roaming in Fiji, or use a local SIM; island resort Wi-Fi may be limited.
Planning notes
Check your passport date first, then lock in flights around the Vancouver nonstop schedule, add insurance with medical evacuation, and arrange a little Fijian cash for the first day.
